Bella
Bella must be completely comfortable now here because she's getting into mischief, daily. : ) Tonight when I got home from band rehearsal, Charles told me that Bella had gotten up on our kitchen table TWICE! She must be channeling the spirit of our Mambo. He was just about 1 year old at the time. He looks a little bit like Bella or vice versa.
She's doing really well at obedience school. She was the star pupil last week. Our instructor said she's REALLY smart and that she's exactly what everyone wants when they get a rescue dog. I couldn't agree more!

Spanky
As I sit here writing this email a certain beagle named Spanky (a.k.a. Jeffrey) is snoring like a truck behind me. He is alive and well and will be 13 on 2/23. I can't believe how well he does for his age. The vet says he's built like a fullback, strong legs and all muscle in his butt. Just like his Mom J. I noticed last year he seemed to be losing some of his hearing unless you're within 8 to 10 feet of him. Other than that, he walks me for miles, eats well, poops well and sleeps well.
A year ago today we moved into a new 4 bedroom 2 1/2 bath single house in Gilbertsville. Even though I brought Spanky to the house several times during the building process, it took him about a month to fully adjust and then one day I noticed he walked in the neighborhood with his old confidence and walked around the house as if he was satisfied that we were both staying. Shortly after that I stopped back at the townhouse in Collegeville before it was sold and took Spanky with me. He came in the door and I went upstairs for a minute. When I came down, he was still standing at the front door. When I told him it was alright to come in, he just looked at me with a concerned look and stayed put. He wouldn't come any further in the house he lived in for eight years. I guess he decided the new digs are better.
On 12/1/08, I had my third open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve. This time they put a mechanical valve in (U of Penn Hospital). I go back to work on Monday so that will be an adjustment for me and for Spanky but I am starting out on a part time basis for a couple of weeks. Each time I went through this (twice in 1998) Spanky was such a care giver. This time around he was a bit more protective when others would come into the house. When the nurse bent over me to remove my staples from my chest, he growled real low and walked real slow to the sofa to me with his hair up letting her know he didn't like her bending over me. I had to place my hand out to him to let him know all was okay.
I had been thinking about you lately and thought I should drop you an email. I hope you are doing well. I am forever grateful that you gave me my little guy.
Roxy
Just wanted to update you on how Roxy is doing. We changed her name to Roxy the same day we got her. She is doing great and just about housebroken. No accidents in the house in over 2 days. Yeah!
She went to the vet on 6/18 and received a fairly clean bill of health. Only issue found was inflammation around her spay sutures.
She received anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drugs. Took her back yesterday and it looks a lot better but the area still looks open. Keeping her on antibiotics and will bring her back Monday to the vet. Otherwise she is a great girl (see pic). She definitely has separation anxiety but I have been reading up on it and we are doing the best we can to calm her down. I am sure she will adjust over time. It is a good thing my close neighbors all work during the day, so no complaints so far.
Hope things are going well on your end. I see that most of the dogs have been or will be adopted. That is great news. Thanks for all that you do for them.

Pippi (no picture)
We adopted Pippi from you in November and I just wanted to let you know how she is doing - great!! We love her to bits. She seems fine with the electric fence in our yard and in fact it seems as if she had already been trained to this. A few accidents in the house but we expected that. Pippi and Sally (our other beagle) get on really well and snuggle together and tussle. No jealousy from Sally really so that was good. Pippi has an adorable character - still a little shy but it enables her to get where she wants (someone's lap!). Even the doggy care home we placed her in when we were away emailed us to say that every evening she was to be found in the owner's lap! Every morning she goes with her sister Sally to my neighbour's to play and loves it. Today was so sweet. My neighbor's dog, Cassie, a border collie, and Pippi were cuddling together and Cassie was groomng her (literally stroking her head with her paw). Pippi is a Tennessee girl - hates snow - but now the sun is out she is a sunbather!
We are so glad that we found you and SOS Beagles. Sally and Pippi are adorable and play happily together - it really has added a happy dimension to our lives and to Sally and Pippi too. Thank you so much.
Barney (aka Bosley)
Barney (aka Bosley) has made himself quite at home and seems to be adjusting to Atlanta nicely. I happened to catch him up on the chair -- as you see in the picture -- and took some quick photos, but he's actually not allowed on the furniture and it hasn't happened again. I've been walking him briefly early in the morning on the days I work, then I leave him in his crate (with a chew treat) for 6 or 7 hours, and he's been just fine when I get home. (3 or so days a week) I then take him for a long walk. When I go out for an hour or two I leave him in the kitchen in his bed. I look forward to leaving him on the porch when the weather warms up.
Today I took Barney to walk at the river near our house for the first time. One guy who passed us running a few times finally stopped and asked with a laugh if I thought we'd ever be able to make it all the way around with Barney smelling and marking everything in sight! He's getting very comfortable with Gary as well as with me. He runs to him every evening and lays on his back so Gary will rub his belly. We're still amazed that he's so incredibly social with other people and with other dogs, especially. He never barks or howls, even if we pass a barking dog on the street. It's obvious that he lived in a home where he was loved -- no signs of aggression or anxiety whatsoever.
So again, I'm so happy that I followed up with you when I saw the picture of him on the SOS Beagle Rescue website. And thanks for being so responsive. It was meant to be that he missed his first run to NJ and was still available! Hope this finds you well -- I appreciate your following up and asking about Mr. Barney!
Bootsie (no picture)
his is Nancy Black writing, I adopted Bootsie in March. I certainly made a good choice!
I just want to tell you what a wonderful dog she is. She is very sweet and is very happy here. When family and friends found out we had a new dog, many presents for her came in the mail. For a few months all the toys sat in a corner and she never paid much attention to them. That has all changed. Every night she takes a toy one by one to play with, and loves the ones that squeak. What a change in six months!
On her original rescue contract it stated she was abandoned by a breeder and was never given any attention. Now she loves to be with me and my husband and wants to be where we are. We do take her with us every chance we have and we take her to Petsmart which she always enjoys. Bootsie is still very shy around strangers so we take her out to socialize her more. At home she is very relaxed and has settled in nicely.
In October we went on vacation and had to board her. I was very nervous about putting her in a kennel. However the staff at Purr' N Pooch, Tinton Falls took very good care of her. They have areas outside and inside where the dogs socialize. Bootsie did befriend one particular dog there for the week. When she came back home her personality changed. She had more confidence and was very playful. It was a big surprise.
Thanks again for all the excellent work you provide for these wonderful dogs. It is great that a dog like Bootsie that had a rough start will now have the life she deserved. I am sure that you have seen many different cases and it must bring you both such joy when there is a happy ending.
